Harbin’s Ice and Snow World is the reason most travellers book the winter flight: a city of floodlit ice palaces, a 500-metre ice slide and Ferris-wheel views, rebuilt from scratch every December on the north bank of the Songhua. The question every itinerary starts with is the same one — where do you sleep so the magic part is easy and the cold part is short?
We are the front-desk team at the Annaman, the designer hotel that opened in 2024 at No. 395 Youyi Road, and from November to February we answer that question at the counter a dozen times a day. Our answer is the one the geography hands us: fifty metres from the south bank of the Songhua, one river crossing from the park, and a room engineered for the deep cold. Below is everything we tell guests at check-in — the routes, the timings, the room picks and the honest caveats — so you can plan the ice city properly before you ever land.
📌 At a glance
- 50 m to the Songhua south bank — the Ice and Snow World side of the river is one short crossing away.
- 370 m to the Lines 2 & 3 metro interchange (Shanghai Street station); Line 2 runs the cross-river spine to Sun Island.
- Breakfast 7:00–12:00 · handmade afternoon tea at 14:00 · warm milk at night · 24-hour robot delivery.
- Every room: smart voice controls, DeRUCCI mattress, mobile screen casting, humidifier, building-wide fresh-air system.
- Rates from $27 in the low season — ice-season weekends book out weeks ahead, so price and availability move together.
❄️ Why the ice-city question starts with a map
Here is the mistake we watch travellers dodge too late: booking a hotel “near Ice and Snow World” and discovering that the park sits on the north bank, while nearly everything else worth seeing — Central Street, Saint Sophia Cathedral, the old Russian quarters, the morning markets — clusters on the south bank around Daoli District. Sleep by the park and you trade a short ride to the ice for a long ride to the whole rest of the city, twice a day, in minus-twenty air.
The Annaman’s argument is the opposite trade. Stand in the lobby, walk fifty metres, and the Songhua is under your hand: in winter a frozen parade ground, in summer a promenade. Cross the street and you are on the riverbank where locals skate, fish through cut holes and drag sledges. Turn south and the old town begins — Central Street is 1.6 km away, Saint Sophia Cathedral 2.1 km, Zhaolin Park’s ice lanterns 2 km, the Hongzhuan Street Morning Market 1.2 km. Guests score our location 9.6, and it is not for the furniture.

The address, precisely
No. 395 Youyi Road, Daoli District, Harbin. The practical meaning of that line: you are between the river at your back and the old town at your feet, with the Lines 2 & 3 interchange around the corner. Line 3 loops the central districts; Line 2 is the one the winter itinerary loves, because it is the cross-river spine toward Sun Island. When you compare hotels, run this same test — distance to both banks, not just to the park gate.
🚇 From bed to ice: the route that actually works
The route we write on the back of the check-in map takes four moves. One: walk five minutes to Shanghai Street station (370 m — reviewers time it, and it is reviewable because the wind is honest). Two: ride Line 2 across the river toward Sun Island, one seat on the map. Three: step off and take the Ice and Snow World shuttle or a short DiDi to the gates — the front desk writes the current shuttle times on the map each week, because the schedule moves with the season. Four: do it all again in reverse after the lights, when the minus-fifteen wind has collected its opinions and every minute of transit is a minute you feel.
That last move is the one the address quietly wins. Festival nights run late — the palaces photograph best at blue hour, the big slide has no queue at opening but a real one by evening, and the fireworks finish after dark. Coming home, the ride from our door to your pre-warmed room is measured in minutes, not an expedition. The bed, fitted with a DeRUCCI mattress, does the rest; the humidifier and the building-wide fresh-air system do the repair work the radiator season demands.
💡 Front-desk tip: book the park’s early slot, not the sunset one. You will ride the 500-metre slide before the queue forms, photograph the palaces in empty blue light, and be back across the river before the deep cold arrives for the evening shift. Guests who take the late slot love it too — they just do it once.
Timing the day, from two seasons of guest reports
- 09:30–10:00 — late house breakfast (it runs to 12:00; the ice night cost you nothing).
- 11:00 — cross to the park at opening; slide first, palaces second.
- 14:00 — back for the handmade afternoon tea, right when the cold has taxed everyone.
- 16:30–18:00 — Zhaolin Park ice lanterns (2 km) or Central Street’s lights, whichever the day wants.
- 20:00+ — the park’s night show; the robot delivers supper to the room without a knock.
🛏 The room that ends the festival day properly
Twelve room categories share the same comfort stack — smart voice controls so you never touch a cold switch twice, mobile screen casting for the day’s photos, the DeRUCCI bed, the humidifier programme. What changes at the top of the ladder is the window. The side-river-view categories — Manxiang Jiangyin Comfy Sleep Double Bed Room, Manyun Wangjiang Tranquil Double Bed Room and Manhe Wangyue Serene Luxe Double Bed Room — put the frozen Songhua itself past the glass: the parade ground by day, the lit bridge by night. Ask the desk to note the river side on your reservation; the view categories are the ones the photographs come from, and they are the first to sell out in season.

⏰ Booking notes from guests who have done it
Honesty section, as we give it at the desk. Book early for ice season: the from-$27 room in October is not the from-$27 room in January — festival weekends fill weeks ahead and the river side goes first. Expect a ¥300 per-room deposit at check-in, refundable at check-out; have a card ready. Travelling as five? The family floor sleeps five on real beds in themed rooms — read our family-rooms guide before you pick. Arriving late? The desk is staffed 24 hours; call a day ahead and the night team will expect you. And if your dates are flexible by even one weekend, compare both — the park is the same park, but the room rate is not the same room rate.
🙋 Frequently asked questions
How far is Annaman Hotel from the Ice and Snow World?
About one river crossing. The hotel stands 50 m from the Songhua’s south bank; the park is on the north bank, reached by Line 2 across the river plus the park shuttle or a short DiDi — typically 25–35 minutes door to gate in ice season, and the front desk keeps current shuttle times at the counter.
Which room should I book for the view of the frozen river?
The side-river-view categories: Manxiang Jiangyin, Manyun Wangjiang and Manhe Wangyue. All three look onto the Songhua; the difference is size and floor. Request the river side at booking — it is noted on the reservation and honoured subject to availability on arrival.
When does Ice and Snow World open?
The park is rebuilt every year and typically opens in mid-to-late December, running through February as the ice allows. Exact dates move with the weather each winter, so check the official announcements for your dates and book the hotel side early — festival weekends are the first to fill.
Is minus-twenty realistic, and what should I pack?
Yes, and colder on the river at night. Pack in layers — thermal base, fleece, windproof shell — plus traction for the ice, spare batteries for cameras (they drain fast), and hand warmers. The hotel’s humidifier and fresh-air system handle the indoor dryness that catches most first-time winter visitors by surprise.
📍 The bottom line
The ice city rewards the well-placed. Sleep fifty metres from the river and the festival becomes one short crossing, the old town becomes an evening walk, and the cold becomes something your room knows how to undo. That is the whole argument — the rest is packing.
